[Magnetic field strength, H]

Magnetic field strength, H

Vector unit that expresses the strength of a magnetic field.

In the SI system, the magnetic field strength is expressed in amperes per metre or A/m. An older unit, from the Gaussian-CGS system, is the Oersted (≈ 79.5775 A/m).

The magnetic field strength is usually given as the symbol H and is the counterpart of the magnetic flux density B. Also called magnetic induction.
